Widowed Abdul Rehman Khan is an Afghani Pathan who lives a simple and poor lifestyle with his widowed mom, and daughter, Amina, in Kabul. He owes money to a money-lender that he had borrowed for Amina's medical treatment, and is unable to re-pay it. He decides to secretly re-locate to Hindustan, without the knowledge of Amina, and he does so in the dark of the night. Upon arrival in Hindustan, he finds that the locals actually fear him and his kind, and blame them for kidnapping young children. A depressed Abdul is unable to get Amina out of his mind, and spends a week without doing any business. After that he sets out to sell dry fruits on the streets. It is here that he meets a young girl, Mini, who lives with her mom, Rama, and her dad, a Writer. Rama is overly cautious and will not permit Mini to see Abdul, while her dad permits her to do so. Abdul sees Amina in Mini and visits her everyday, pampering her with dry fruits. On her birthday Mini misses him and goes to look for him ...

A haunting, memorable movie

The film was made in commemoration of some anniversary (the precise one escapes me), and is made unlike the usual Bollywood movies. It has a lot of sensitive moments, such before leaving his home, Khan takes a print of his daughter's palms on a piece of paper, and keeps that close to him.
The songs are very moving, and excellently composed by Salil Choudhury. Both "aye mere pyaare watan", and "aaye kahaan se, gangaa, jaaye kahaare" are wonderful pieces with deep philosophical undertones.
I find the last scene particularly touching. This is when Khan gets out the prison, and comes to see Mini one last time, before perhaps returning to his native land. Mini is all grown up, and is about to be married. She doesn't remember him. This hurts Khan tremendously, because he then suddenly realizes that his little girl whom he left back home, most likely has no memory of him. Nothing is said outright, but you can see all this portrayed by Balraj Sahni, without saying a word.

I'm very tired of Italian Science Fiction getting a bad rap for being dull films. Just sit back and let your self be hypnotized by the world that a film like BATTLE OF THE WORLDS creates and I guarantee you will find your self on a trip to the end of the universe. The sound effects and use of color alone will have you wishing this film will never end...and it almost seems it doesn't

K. Gordon Murray strikes again!
Like many Baby Boomers, I saw this picture in a Children's Matinee in the sixties. It was bad then, it's bad now. However, I enjoy it for the nostalgia of the times, namely my recollections of seeing family oriented movies on a large screen.
I did some research on K. Gordon Murray and a competing company, Childhood Productions run by Barry Yellin. Both men tried to corner the kiddie matinee venue in the sixties. As the market began to dry up, they both formed secondary companies that released X-rated porno films! Quite a product line, wasn't it? Murray got into serious tax troubles with the IRS in the seventies. They literally hounded him to death! He died of a heart attack while they were investigating him. The IRS seized his assets including the 35mm color dupe negatives he was using to strike the release prints. For all I know, they may still have them. AIP purchased syndication rights from both Murray and Yellin before they folded and distributed 16mm copies on television. The rights eventually returned to the foreign production companies.

Too Hollywood
Having seen Brother Sun Sister Moon, and Francisco, this 1961 version of the story of St. Francis pales next to the other two.
It looked like something from Disney: all primary colored costumes, healthy looking, rosy-cheeked Middle Ages citizens of Assisi, smiling as if they hadn't a care in the world. What were the producers thinking?! There was a little more history in this version though, including Francis' visit to Jerusalem, and his meeting with the Sulton. While the story was certainly comprehensive than Brother Sun Sister Moon, I prefer the latter even with Donovan's soundtrack, which I'm getting used to since I bought the video! Bradford Dillman did a fair job, but Dolores Hart with her teased, helmet-head sprayed hair looked very out of place, sad to say. A lean Stuart Whitman as Paolo played a major part and helped carry the film. I was tempted to not watch the whole thing, but I gave in. If you are a St. Francis admirer you'll watch it and learn a few more things about this remarkable man.

A delightful spy story
For Eyes Only is a delightful spy story, shot in black and white, with sturdy guys strolling around in raincoats, reminiscent of The Third Man or Humphrey Bogart films. It is 1961. The American Military Information Department in West-Germany plans to support anti-communist groups in the GDR (East-Germany). The aim is to provoke a civil war in the GDR, which will be the start of an invasion by the NATO forces. Fortunately the GDR intelligence service (Staatssichterheitsdienst) gets wind of the affair. They realize that making the American plans public will diffuse the situation, but therefore they need convincing evidence. It happens, that since several years one of their best secret agents Lorenz alias Hansen has infiltrated the MID Headquarters in Wuerzburg. There the invasion plans are hidden in a safe. For Eyes Only is the American classification for its required degree of secrecy. Hansen gets orders to pilfer the plans, and transport them home. A complicating factor is that the Americans suspect the presence of a mole inside their organization. However, for the moment the American major Collins has full confidence in his subordinate Hansen. Collins is a somewhat shabby character, who fools around with lonely ladies and expense allowances and smuggles German art. The Americans subject their personnel in Wuerzburg to a test with a lie detector, but Hansen manages to deceive this equipment. At the same time he succeeds in copying the key of the safe. During this endeavor he discovers that there is another mole named Schuck, who also tries to steal the plans. Schuck wants to sell them to a criminal organization. Before Hansen can steal the plans, Schuck makes an attempt and is caught in the act. The Americans hand over the poor guy to his criminal clients who without process liquidate the failure (the crooks do not want any witnesses, I guess). Now the Americans feel safe, and this gives Hansen some extra time. The invasion plans have been transferred from the safe into an imitation refrigerator, and Hansen decides to pilfer the thing as a whole. Again he succeeds, and he takes the refrigerator in his car to the GDR. The Americans and their West-German allies try to catch him just as he is crossing the border zone. They perforate his car with bullets, but luckily he is able to reach the GDR border post on the other side. The invasion plans are publicized in all the news papers, making the NATO look bad, and peace is saved once more. Sighs of relief and end of story. In fact the story is based on true events, although there is some debate on whether the real refrigerator actually contained any invasion plans. The film found wide appraisal, even in the free west. But also: "The script shuns no fantasy in its invention of rude moments of suspense" (Filmkritik, Muenchen; perhaps a James Bond fan). The moments of ideological propaganda are rare. One is worth mentioning because it is so funny: the operator of the lie detector is clearly an anti-Semite. This hints at the half-hearted purge of Nazi-personnel in West-Germany, due to the reconstruction efforts and the cold war against Bolshevism, that both required a rapid reconciliation. Also for the Bolsheviks any type of anti-communism was equated to fascism (even before World War II they branded the democratic socialists as social-fascists). However, this hoax was included mainly for internal purposes, directed at the East-German audience, and will not mislead well-informed people.

Stale, unfunny but only film featuring Fernandel in the Wild West
The theme of the decent everyman happening to be the lookalike of a dangerous outlaw is not new and Fernandel himself capitalized on the trick in Verneuil's 1953 "L'Ennemi public N°1". So expect no great discovery from this slow-paced, unfunny comedy. It has really nothing to do with the classic of the genre, Ford's "The whole town's talking". On the other hand, the reconstruction of the Wild West by art director Robert Giordani is above average ( not so bad for a French picture ) and it is rather unexpected to see our Fernand from Marseille move in such exotic settings and exchange lines with British Adrienne Corri, Spanish Eleonora Vargas and American born Jess Hahn !

first virtue - Russian flavor, result of precise recipes. than - brilliant performance , nothing new when the cast is represented by Batalov and Smoktunovsky. but, more important, the script. it is a Soviet story but root is not science, not a love story, not the sacrifice of a remarkable man for humanity benefit but the existence like huge puzzle. images, music, the light, the force of shadows, all are ingredients of an universal tale and about reasons of small and ordinaries gestures. and it is not a surprise because a great director and a magnificent cast are wise parts for a form of poem in images, not exactly an art film but a film of ideas, behind propaganda command, before Perestroika wave.so, must see it !

Confusing spy film with young Elke!
This is basically a mess with a lovely as always Ms. Sommer and good jazz score. Decent location work, but the script is all over the place. I don't know if this made money in the early 60's, probably did. The presence of a 20 y/o Elke Sommer (very well cast) helps it along, but there's no where to go with this story.
A 3 out of 10. Best performance = Elke Sommer. Slight nudity and cool clubs don't make up for the stuttering lack of balance or control. Some beautiful girls, lots of smoking and slick maneuvers by the men doesn't translate into cohesive story. But Elke fans should check this one out (very early in her career) pre-America.

A movie about faith...with a cynical edge
Adolescent English farm-girl discovers an escaped, bearded convict sleeping in the family barn and thinks he's Jesus. Young Kathy needs to believe this, even after the police come to cart him away. He even drops a picture of the Savior, which seems to symbolize not only the prisoner's fall from grace but one more sign for Kathy that, yes, this mysterious man might be Him. "Whistle Down the Wind" is a hard-shelled movie that says we lose hope and faith as we mature--which isn't an original idea for a film, but the cynical way this is presented catches you off-guard. One little boy numbers the eggs he has has eaten (a mixture of his bemusement and his feeling of monotony), one little girl vows to keep counting until Kathy comes out of the barn. These children need to believe too, of course, but they're much more raw than Kathy; they strip ideas down to the basics. Kathy believes blindly. It's a touching character, the centerpiece of the film, and I was enchanted by Hayley Mills' open face and yearning smile. The other youngsters are also remarkable. If the film doesn't offer us fanciful answers, it does provide playful bits of visual humor. Even the rhythm of the kids' words is comical (and the way they relate to one another seems very natural). The film gives away nothing without an eternal struggle, and at the end there is no clear answer. I believe the next day would become routine for the children, they would go back to their basics. But Kathy has changed, and the convict has as well. Their lives intersected for a moment, and, though others became involved, they both learned something from the other about the need to believe. ***1/2 from ****

I liked it a lot
This movie did a great job of showing the French lifestyle and the time during which it was made. Most of the comments here are negative, but I thought this was one of the best movies I've seen in many months.
Jill's daily life, shown in the opening sequence when she travels by boat and bicycle to see her mother and various friends, is a wonderful example of European life where things are much prettier and healthier than in the US. Individuals are free to be with nature without making a conscious effort to do so.
The story of the movie is OK, not great, but certainly ahead of its time in the portrayal of the media culture. Diana Princess of Wales should have watched this movie.

Family values: who can celebrate an observer over a dead hero?
Fans of "Danger Man" will be surprised to see McGoohan playing a man so passive in the face of danger, but this film buttresses many of the values that McGoohan insisted upon for the character of John Drake, the spy who abhorred violence. Not only does his character Eric forego a violent response to the robbery; he spends the rest of the film demonstrating the futility of reflexive violence. Eric's friend John Kester died because he reacted violently to the thieves. Had Eric resisted, he too would have died. And the robbery would still have been successful. As Eric concludes, "It's stupid to risk your life for a few thousand kroner, especially when you have a wife and a child....I wish to God Kester had been an observer too."
The film does a nice job of depicting the price Eric and John's families pay for the robbery. The opening scenes set up the two parallel families: mothers happily serving breakfast, fathers good-naturedly walking their sons to school, sons happy and secure. That tranquility is forever lost to the Kester family with John's death. Kester's wife has no illusions about what she has lost; her son will grow up to conclude that his father was a good man, but she will always wish that he had chosen, like Eric, to be an observer so that he could return to his family.
Eric's family suffers in other ways. His wife Helen comes to wonder if he couldn't have done something to prevent the robbery; he comes to doubt himself and her; and their son Rolf is bullied by his schoolmates. From the beginning Rolf seeks to protect his parents. On the night of the robbery, he accedes to Eric's plea that they be careful not to upset Rolf's mother; later, once his schoolmates have made his life horrendous because of their scorn for his presumably cowardly father, he desperately tries to keep his father from discovering his misery. It takes Rolf's school teacher to point out the obvious: Rolf is as stubbornly protective of his father as his father is of Rolf and Helen. No matter how abused, Rolf and Eric stay true to themselves. The psychic price of this behavior, however, is high.
About 2/3 into the film, the viewer will be wondering whether this stoic persistence is worth it. Eric and Helen Berger have become strangers to one another, and neither can comfort Rolf. Perhaps, the viewer thinks, it might have been better if Eric had been killed--at least his memory would be honored and loved, and his marriage would never have known the doubt and alienation that has come to plague Eric and Helen.
The convenient deus ex machina of having Eric form a close tie to one of the robbers allows the film to resolve both the emotional and the philosophical issues at debate. After the thief insists that he would have shot Eric had Eric resisted the robbery, the question of the utility of violence is settled neatly. And because the thief also reveals that Andersson, the Post Office hero, did not in fact offer brave resistance, Eric can put aside the myth of successful violence. Confronting Andersson after hours and showing him up as a blowhard frees Eric to reassert his own self esteem and reclaim communion with his wife.
The ending (especially given McGoohan's famous reluctance to play love scenes) is quite touching, as indeed, is the entire film. The pain and loss that explode in the lives of the Berger and Kester families feels just as shocking to the viewer as it is to the on-screen protagonists. This film depicts their suffering with great sensitivity, and it's hard to begrudge the convenient dramatical device of the compassionate thief. The Bergers deserve some happiness after their ordeal, and a cautionary tale about the illusory appeal of violence is as instructive in 2006 as in 1961.

Don't expect a masterpiece but...
As an Edward L Cahn movie, you can guess that's not BRIDGE OVER THE RIVER KWAI or FIXED BAYONETS. But I was nevertheless surprised by the darkness of this story telling the mission of a group of GI - during WW2 - who must prevent Japanese army to penetrate into India from Burma. They are dropped by parachute and then have to get help from the natives; and in this tale it is native girls...
Of course, you can guess what that means. But it's a downbeat story, very sad in the ending. I won't say more. Just one thing, the characters are not uninteresting.

Ultimately, he finds himself in the exact opposite position he held in the first episode: then a labor manager, Kaji is now a prisoner of war, forced to work for the Russians, whom do not seem to hold to the Communist ideals in which Kaji himself had put his faith.

Contemporary Kraftsmanship
anyone who is seriously interested in understanding what's wrong with the "human" should watch this excellent piece of art. Tatusuya nakadai is delivering here an astonish performance.
Kobayashi is definitely one of the greatest directors and offers precision and coherence to this trilogy. Music is obviously an tremendous emotional experience. There is no necessity to write much, the movie speaks for itself as long as one understands the movements and rhythms conveyed through the subtle evolution of the main character. A long trilogy worth watching till the end in the vein of harakiri (seppuku). PS. understanding our history seems to be of great importance, especially in the actual political context of unrest, what happened and is happening in the arab world is a very important issue, violence unfortunately still prevails.

The script was written by Dieter Hildebrandt, a sharp and still active satirist. The script surely has a satirical base and there is funny witticism on the German economic miracle (Wirtschaftswunder) of the fifties, but it is all toned-down for mainstream use and as the film progresses the satire more or less dies out.
What in the end remains is a pleasant, well-paced comedy, with good cast (even Marika Rökk is funny). There are couple of nice and simple songs, sung a.o. by Conny Froboess, one of my favourite singers when I was still a boy.

I saw it on TV, on a great cable independent movie show. I also saw it twice. The first time I tuned in a bit late and missed the opening. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out whose film it was. Some of it looked completely like classic - period Antonioni, some like Mexican Bunuel. There are some great scenes: the "Founders Day" festival for example. It's all really murky and ambiguous. Although blond people are lit dizzyingly high key. There's lots of creepy sexual weirdness. All that good stuff... I'd love to see more of Torre Nilsson's films. Maybe he doesn't have his own voice; maybe he's another hidden treasure, like Imamura. Who knows?
