A dramatization of Britain's notorious Crippen murder case. American-born Hawley Harvey Crippen (nicknamed "Peter"), a mild-mannered, middle-aged doctor who made his living in London selling quack remedies, was convicted and hanged in 1910 for poisoning his wife, Belle, dismembering her body and burying the remains in the coal cellar of their home before fleeing England with his mistress, Ethel Le Neve, only to be arrested aboard ship while en route to North America. The movie opens with the start of Crippen's trial in the Old Bailey; flashbacks provide a look at the misery of Crippen's marriage to the overbearing Belle, a failed music-hall performer with an eye for younger men, and how Crippen found true love in the person of his young secretary, until events reached their dreadful climax. That Crippen caused his wife's death, there is little doubt, but this movie wonders: Was it a deliberate act?

Bloodless Passion

A dour little movie, with flat out ugly photography and ill-matched pairings. In short, the 90- minutes is something of an ordeal to sit through, that is, if you have the usual movie expectations. I don't know what the director told lead actor Pleasance (Crippen), but he acts like he swallowed a lemon throughout, even when in the loving company of the luscious Eggar (Ethel). I know he's supposed to be repressed, but his permanent paralysis appears unreal. Then too, seeing this unpleasant little middle-aged man paired with the lovely young Eggar amounts to more than a stretch. Then there's Belle (Brown), his boisterously unfaithful wife. About five-minutes into the film and I was hoping someone would strangle her and rescue my ears. The movie's only mystery is why it took him so long.

The case itself, from books I've read, was pretty much open-and-shut against the doctor. Certainly he had reasons to commit the crime, which coincides with the movie. However, I suspect the element of doubt about his intentions that the movie introduces was an invention to add a provocative note to an otherwise unremarkable screenplay. Certainly, Crippen is presented as a somewhat sympathetic character by movie's end, which looks like a belated effort to humanize an otherwise one-note performance. Anyhow, the lead characters come across more like stereotypes than real people. And that along with the truly grim-faced production amounts to a forgettable movie experience.

Which complicates the task of François who, to respect the last wishes of the testator, has gone in search of the treasure of Poldavia. Lupin is dead ,long live Lupin!

When Arsene Lupin is the subject of a movie,it follows the quite rigid rule: MTV works are faithful to the books whereas the theatrically-released movies are generally original screenplays (the last one by Jean-Paul Salomé was an improvement for that matter )and there's the rub: none of these screenwriters can match Maurice Leblanc's brilliance ,nobody at all has ever been able of supplying a real sense of mystery , of true suspense .Even a famous talented director such as Jacques Becker failed .

An "Arsene Lupin Contre Arsene Lupin " was already filmed in the thirties (1937,with a bad choice for the actor:Jules Berry was a great actor, but not handsome enough for the role),but Molinaro's movie is no remake for the story is thoroughly different.Unlike Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie ,Maurice Leblanc never killed his hero. This movie begins with a piece of news announcing his death followed by his funeral .He is survived by two natural sons ,who ,when the story begins,do not know each other (hence the title).Jean -Claude Brialy (who would be the best Lupin ever in the MTV "813") and Jean -Pierre Cassel are well cast but the movie looks more like a spoof on Leblanc's novels and a tribute to Feuillade's serials circa 1915 than a true adventure of the burglar gentleman;Molinaro uses old-fashioned techniques ,recalling the silent era.Catherine Deneuve's late sister ,Françoise Dorléac,appears as a reporter (and one of the Lupin bros' lover)

Long live love!

"Vive Henri IV ,vive l'amour" is part of Autant-Lara's weak era (roughly from 1958 to 1961) an era when he was filming rubbish. They say he had to accept the dirty work to be able to make his "Tu ne Tueras Point" (1961-1963) ,the only French film dealing with conscientious objection.

"Vive Henri IV ,vive l'Amour" looks like a poor man's Guitry in spite of Jeanson who occasionally comes up with one good line or two. It's cardboard characters history ;they are as much alive as in a wax museum .Some actors have only one scene or two (Blier as Sully,Danielle Darrieux,Nicole Courcel). The plot revolves around the king's desire for Mademoiselle de Montmorency who could be his granddaughter (she's 17,he's 57).He marries her to Prince de Condé,provided that His Majesty will replace him for the wedding night. But young handsome Condé is not prepared to accept it and he runs away with his wife to the monarch's great displeasure.

Overall,it is entertaining stuff ;if you forget history, Melina Mercouri who overplays as queen Marie de Medicis, and an unpleasant scene in a monastery where Condé is mistaken for a homosexual, the rest is bawdy moderately enjoyable stuff. If you do not ask too much, you can watch...

A war mystery, easily the best one

It's not often you get a "war mystery" film, and of course when you do, you are usually dealing with spies.

In this case, the mystery is about a German spy dressed up as an American soldier during World War II. He has forged papers, and his goal is to make it to a town where a resistance member is kept. This resistance member is a liaison between all the groups, and obviously knows connections to each. He would be a great prize.

We see the command given to the spy, but not his face, and we are then taken to a site where American soldiers have been whittled away from their individual units, and eight join up, including the by the book lieutenant and the veteran sergeant.

This is a top mystery and a top war film. It combines both elements, and it's difficult to say why without spoilers. Suffice to say that the characters are very believable, the action very credible, and the spy is exactly the type of person who would be seen as most successful.

The title lets you know that when they are whittled down to four, they will find the spy (or he will succeed and exit). I don't think it's a spoiler to say that the ones who die before this are given high drama to their deaths, although the first is a wounded man who never lasts long enough for the high drama. With each casualty, our director succeeds in making you feel more and more empathy for them. The last American who dies is given the most tragedy, as we see him to be the possible hero.

This is a lost gem, and easily the best of the war mysteries. Tons better than the blockbuster big budget bits of propaganda that are more famous.

Modest women in prison flick

So Evil So Young has a great title and an early appearance by Jill Ireland, but at heart it remains what it is: a Danziger Brothers production. That means a poor script, a largely unknown cast, and a minimum of thrills. The film hearkens back to similar American films like Caged (1950) but is, of course, a much more genteel affair. Nonetheless, this film is relatively interesting, being one of the few Technicolor films the Brothers produced. Perhaps the Eadie money arrived early that month. It's always fun to see these glimpses of pre-Beatles coffee bar culture in England, especially when you can see how bright red the glace cherries are on the buns, and there are a couple of brief snippets of early '60s rock and roll, performed by John Charlesworth as Tom, Jill's love interest whilst she's behind bars in a girls' borstal serving time for a crime she did not commit. Not to worry--justice is ultimately served.

Review :

It fails to assert its significance

A young Afro-American soldier (Hugh Hurd) is imprisoned by some villagers in a miniscule, mountainous village somewhere nearby Tokyo. The peasants are constrained to feed and take care of the foreigner on account of prefecture's orders. At the onset, the prisoner has to endure some minor humiliations, but soon the captors begin to subject him to other forms of repression…

This relatively engaging war drama by Nagisa Ôshima is quite politically intransigent and ambitious, but suffers from hardly eupeptic narrative structure and disorientating manner of filming which occasionally renders the occurrences on the screen somewhat incomprehensible. Nevertheless, the resonance of Ôshima's opus is indubitably munificent and the very concept of commenting on Japanese imperialism, racism and hypocrisy of Japanese society conjures up a highly riveting yarn to analyse. The conspectus of the flick indicates that the theme is analogous to the one tackled in Ôshima's Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence (1983) i.e. the clash of the two cultures, yet the character of the aforementioned Negro American soldier remains in the background and Ôshima never intends to delve in his past, experiences and his perception of the reality in which he is temporarily forced to vegetate, but to plunge in the Japanese mentality. To illustrate the issue, Ôshima exhibits the war from the perspective of a province. Precisely like in case of Ôshima's The Sun's Burial (1960) in which the inhabitants of slums constitute the omnibus main hero, the material revolves around the villagers. The majority of the collective treats the soldier like an object, not like a human being only owing to the fact that he is black. One of the main principles of rural existence is to live in an economical way, thus the arrival of the foreigner becomes an additional burden – a burden which peasants are eager to get rid of and the fact that the overseas visitor is black exerts an incendiary impact on their attitude towards him. Apart from this phenomenon, the film alludes to the dereliction of women in Japanese society in which they had the inferior position to males who took advantage of this privilege with a view to indulging themselves.

Rentarô Mikuni prosperously plays his role of a slavishly obedient bureaucrat who being apprehensive of hazardous consequences, prevents the soldier from being murdered. Hugh Hurd is probably a decent performer, but he never gets the opportunity to expose his acting skills, he just stands and observes everything transpiring around him. There are likewise generally dexterous performances, particularly from Kyû Sazanka, Toshirô Ishidô and Sadako Sawamura.

The cinematography by Yoshitsugu Tonegawa remains rather unremarkable throughout the entire motion picture, although there are several beauteously perpetuated instants such as the ending which is propitiously adorned with some deliberate tracking shots which are as slow as the final funeral parade and endow the ensemble with even more sepulchral tone. Notwithstanding, the visual aspect of the flick is sporadically extortionately sophisticated. At one point, there is a fight sequence whose upshot one conceives in the successive scene, despite the fact that the movie endeavours to display the outcome. Two men struggle with each other and subsequently, we behold a human lying at the foot of a slope on which they were combating. The way it is captured by camera suffuses the moment with equivocality as it indicates that it might be somebody else. Be that as it may, it looks awkward and somewhat baffling. The orchestral score by Riichirô Manabe is everything but something memorable. It is reminiscent of other countless soundtracks from numerous war dramas made in Japan. At least one does not take any notice of it, hence it never feels exasperating.

Whilst some fans of Japanese cinema will undoubtedly disclose something to relish with, The Catch by Ôshima cannot pride itself on being flawless as it fails to assert its significance owing to its narrative irregularity, lack of visual fluency and cinematic intensity which may be discerned in his other opuses e.g. Cruel Story of Youth (1960) and The Sun's Burial (1960), nonetheless, the script implicates a sufficient portion of historical context to infuse some flamboyancy into the unequal content.

Review :

Pretty good.

We saw the 1961 film "Samson" by Andrzej Wajda on Saturday. This was a black and white movie in Polish with English subtitles. There were a few instances in which the dialog did not have subtitles. This was limited to a few lines here and there. This movie was set in Warsaw and the Warsaw ghetto during World War II. It was much like "The Pianist" by Roman Polanski (2002). The lead actor even looked like Wladyslaw Szpilman (Adrien Brody) of "The Pianist."

"Samson" is the story of a Jew, Jakub Gold (Serge Merlin), at the polytechnic university in Warsaw imprisoned and sentenced to 10 years for accidentally killing his friend in German- occupied Poland. In prison he makes several contacts that will factor later in the movie. The prisoners are released when Warsaw is bombed. Jakub is sent to the Warsaw ghetto where the Jews are "doomed to death for the crime of existence" and is assigned to picking up corpses from the streets and helping to provide them with a Jewish burial. Along the way he picks up his own mother. After one such burial Jakub and another man escape from the ghetto. After he escapes he desires to go back into the ghetto to share the fate of his kinsmen. After being locked in an apartment building after curfew he meets a woman, Lucyna (Alina Janowska) , who is also a Jew but who has been hiding her identity in order to survive. Lucyna falls in love with him. She tells him "You know what it's like to escape the Warsaw ghetto but I escape every day." They are separated. Lucyna thinks that Jakub went back into the ghetto. She identifies herself as a Jew to the Germans in order to be sent to the ghetto in order to find him. (Shades of an O. Henry tale here.) Meanwhile he finds refuge in an apartment belonging Józef Malina (Jan Ciecierski), whom he met in prison, and Malina's niece, Kazia (Elzbieta Kepinska). Jakub wishes that he had the strength of the biblical Samson to fight the Germans single handedly. Kazia falls for him. Jakub vacillates and instead of returning to the ghetto hides in their basement until the Warsaw uprising has ended. He only returns to the ghetto after the Germans had put down uprising and destroyed the ghetto in the process. Afterwards he meets others of the resistance.

It was not quite clear why Jakob did not return to the Warsaw ghetto and instead spent his time with Mr. Malina and Kazia. He did not have the strength of the biblical Samson after all I suppose.

Review :

Beware of the star

Petticoat Pirates is a perfectly innocuous British comedy completely ruined by the insertion of popular TV comedian Charlie Drake into the action. This was Associated British Picture Corporation's second attempt to propel Drake to movie stardom following the previous year's "Sands of the Desert". This time ABPC were not only filming in colour, but also in CinemaScope (at a time when Rank were only granting their big comedy star Norman Wisdom, massive at the box office, black and white 1.75:1). The plot revolves around a Women's Royal Naval Service base, the chief of which has been lobbying for WRENs to serve at sea (an advanced concept for 1961!). When the admirals refuse, the WREN's take over a frigate one quiet night and put to sea. Surprisingly, the plot does not involve the women being hopeless and having to be rescued by men (although there is a rather patronising sequence involving seasickness) and the results of the WRENs efforts require the admiral to eat his words. Interspersed with this action, in a totally haphazard way, are various scenes with Drake (who's character is imaginatively named Charlie Drake) involving his trademark slapstick and all totally irrelevant to the story. If this had been shot in black and white in the standard ratio it would probably be remembered fondly along with the host of other British comedies of the era, the insertion of Drake, however, kills it stone dead.

Pleasant viewing, and worth watching for great talent

A social commentary on people being neighborly. Hugo Haas is a former director who notices how people in his neighborhood are mean to one another. He proposes to shoot a movie (fake, of course), and the whole neighborhood comes together to be discovered. Billy Gilbert and Margaret Hamilton have wonderful scenes together, and Marie Windsor is a hoot as a would be glamour girl. William Schallert has a prominent role towards the end of the film. A striking look at love vs. poverty

This is an early movie directed by Masahiro Shinoda (his sixth) and thus made before he was able to select the projects he wanted to make. Most of the early movies of his that I've seen so far have been well made but plagued with inferior scripts. But, even though Shinoda did not later seem to have much affection for this movie, it is superior to most of his early work and stands up well on its own. The story is set in a fishing community where many family's traditional way of life is threatened by encroaching industrialization. The lead characters are a couple who collect and sell seaweed and their two grown daughters who have taken jobs at a local factory to help make ends meet. The oldest daughter has reached an age where she is starting to attract marriage proposals and the main plot of the movie is over the question of whether she is going to marry for love or money. Shinoda was only given three weeks to shoot this(which may explain its running time of 66 minutes) but you would never guess that by looking at it. Shinoda was apparently incapable of making a visually uninteresting movie and this one is no exception. And for once he was given a script worthy of him. A story of this type could easily have descended into sentimentality, but the script and Shinoda's restraint make this a very enjoyable movie.

A time capsule and loving homage

As a Marylander, this film is clearly a loving homage to the islands of Chincoteague and Assateague. A darling film, with a cast containing many locals, and actual Beebe family members (and their accents), this film has heart. Had to be a labor of love, or they would have brought in professional actors for it all, and left the look and feel of the locals on the cutting room floor. Instead we get a time capsule of a Mayberry style life, that was unique to the nation. You can still go to the pony crossing, and you can still buy ponies, but after some folk thought they could put the foals in their car trunks for the ride home, things changed, and they cost a lot more than they did then.

My 9-year-old daughter is sitting next to me, here in 2012, transfixed by this 1961 film. A must see.

Review :

A Calculating Life

Although Arnold Rothstein was a great deal older than David Janssen when he portrayed Rothstein in King Of The Roaring Twenties, he does deliver a good performance as the rather bloodless Rothstein who had the heart of a calculating machine. He came by that personality by being a mathematical genius as a child and deciding to apply his talents in the best way calculated to make money. Rothstein in real life and Janssen on the screen spent their lives calculating.

In fact the title is something of a misnomer because Rothstein being born in 1882 to a respectable middle class Jewish family with father played in the film by Joseph Schildkraut, started his career way before the Roaring Twenties set in. His most famous exploit, the fixing of the 1919 World Series is certainly before the Twenties, but when Prohibition came in, Rothstein saw the possibilities.

The characters in the film are mostly fictional and in some cases pseudonyms are used. Jack Carson's farewell big screen role as Tammany politician Tim O'Brien is more than likely based on Jimmy Hines, later convicted by Thomas E. Dewey. Carson is always good in any film he's in.

The two supporting players who stand out are Dan O'Herlihy as a fictional rogue cop who was taking payoffs back when Janssen was a kid and Mickey Rooney who was the best in the film as Rothstein's boyhood pal who meets a tragic end. The women in Rothstein's life are Dianne Foster and British bombshell Diana Dors who do well as typical Roaring Twenties flappers.

The film has the look and feel of The Untouchables TV series which spawned a revival of the gangster films, this time using the real names of the public enemies. The smartest one of them all Arnold Rothstein might well have been called, King Of The Roaring Twenties.

Review :

A British Masterpiece.

`It Happened Here' Directed by Kevin Brownlow and Andrew Mollo is a Classic of British Cinema. The Film is remarkable in its authenticity, given the fictional scenario, the invasion of Britain by the Nazis during World War Two.

The look of the Picture is very raw and earthy which adds to its realistic style.

The German soldiers look perfect, I say this because it is so rare that Directors make such a concerted effort for perfection.

Andrew Mollo and Kevin Brownlow are two of the most talented and unrecognized Directors in Britain. This Film is an example of the best of British Independent Film making and should be seen.
