I do the work before the night comes

Produced by the Lutheran Missouri Synod I'll Give My Life plays like an expanded version of one of their television episodes of This Is The Life which was a long running television series with religious dramas. It's a sincere effort helped in large part by the professional cast of familiar faces.

Ray Collins plays the head of a successful engineering firm who has hopes that his son John Bryant will join him in the firm. But Collins gets the shock of his life when Bryant tells him after war service he wants to go to the seminary and become a minister. Later on he tells him he wants to become a missionary and gets an assignment in New Guinea. Even worse Collins's secretary Angie Dickinson quits and marries Bryant and they start a family in New Guinea.

The film is played out over the course of the next ten or so years and it goes through the trials and heartaches and tragedies of what happens and what can happen to missionaries. Of course the film takes the position that the work is worth it and has to be done before night comes in the biblical sense.

Religious folks will find this an inspiring film and it truly is a well made film with a simple and powerful message.

Overly sentimental musical, but with Marisol it works.

Marisol's second movie features a fantastic supporting cast that saves it from all the contrived melodrama about a dysfunctional family saved by an orphan relative. Isabel Garces and Pulgarcito keep the plot moving between musical numbers.

Two men and a group of children try to escape the wrath of an island volcano

This film has been firmly entrenched in my mind since i first saw it in 1974 at the age of seven. I have often thought about it, sometimes forgetting the title, but never forgetting the horror i felt at seeing the explosions and the flowing lava, and feeling the panic of the characters. Man's insignificance and helplessness against mother nature is portrayed with a sense of evil; Not unlike lord of the Flies. Every now and then, it has been replayed on TV, so i have watched it again and refreshed my memory. Even though older now, and more Desensitised to that type of stuff i have enjoyed reflecting as i watch it again. I feel that it set a standard for others to come, with a mixture of suspense, heroism and tragedy that certainly leaves no punches pulled.

Now, Maddy, you've heard me purr.

If this film was remade today, it would feature Paris and Nicole and other trust fund babies who spend their time in the clubs of LA.

As it is, it is European dilitantes we see with the young Elke Sommer. And, oh, does she look good with the wind blowing her golden blonde tresses in her tiny bikini. Only seven years old at the time, the bikini was made for Elke. Unfortunately, when your sure it came off, we get to see the coastline, instead of Elke.

Olivier (Christian Pezey) managed to get the top off, but chickened out with noble intentions before we got a peek.

But, the dallying changed to darkness as one member was chosen as a scape goat for a tragedy. One thought there might be something between Elke and Olivier, but neither could cross the bridge, and they ended up as expected.

One still bemoans the fact that these trust fund babies were not born in the current era when panties are left at home.

Quirky, comic thriller from the master director of third cinema

This film comes from the cream of Cuban cinematic tradition. Released just three years after the revolution, this is a more lighthearted approach from director Tomas Gutierrez Alea.

The plot follows an Cuban exile who has returned to the island from Miami to locate his 12 English Chairs, one of which his dying mother told him contains valuable jewels. However, on his return he realises all of his property has been possessed by the government, and so goes on the trail to find them. It turns out he is not the only person on the trail, and he enlists the help of a younger man.

I enjoyed the comic elements of this film. Gutierrez Alea, best known for Memories of Underdevelopment, here provides a quirky critique of capitalism through its very self-interested protagonist, and the people who are duped into his freedom fighting scheme. The film is ideologically socialist, but Gutierrez Alea was also a critic of some Revolutionary policies and this film is not without self-irony.

This film deserves to be seen by more people than appear to have seen it (35 votes?). It's a funny, intelligent thriller that has no doubt suffered due to Cuba's geo-political situation, rather than its narrative and aesthetic achievements.

Nudism is Natural!

"Daughter Of The Sun" is about a school board member who anonymously receives a nudist magazine in the mail. There on page 15 is one of the female teachers at his school, Miss Pamela Walker. He calls an emergency meeting of the school board to decide whether she should be fired.

This is a Herchell Gordon Lewis movie so don't expect the subject matter to be treated too seriously. A young male board member decides that he wants to learn a little bit more about the nudist lifestyle before he decides on whether to vote in favor of firing Miss Walker. He accompanies her to the Sunshine Nudist Camp. There, he sees that nudists are normal people who just happen to enjoy everyday activities without their clothes on. Lots (and lots) of shots of swimming, sunbathing and volleyball ensue. 2/10

Enjoyable trio of comedy/dramas with famous femme fatales

I remember seeing this as a teenager when it was in the movies. An entertaining trio with a sexual theme but no nudity in the 60's. The best was 'The Censor' with a hyper-voluptuous Anita Ekberg as a 100 foot long billboard ad (for milk) that comes to life to torment the local censor -- absolutely hilarious. Then the magnificent Sophia Loren in "The Lottery" where the winner of the drawing wins her for the night. Last is with the late Romy Schneider in a bittersweet tale about a philandering husband who uses their wealth on prostitutes. At least that's what I remember after well over 30 years. If anyone knows where I can rent this again, please let me know.

A poorly written film that is relentlessly unfunny despite the presence of quite a few well-known British actors of the period

With General Fitzadam's retirement approaching, Lady Dodo Fitzadam has her heart set on them buying a lovely little cottage to spend their years together. Sadly the cottage is beyond their means and the General vetoes it just before he sets off to carry out orders on another placement. Leaving his wife in charge of the men must have made sense, but the General was not to know that Dodo would hit upon a money making idea that runs rather contrary to the military's rules. Ordering the soldiers to dress as butlers, Dodo sells the base as an idyllic holiday villa in remote Scotland – drawing paying American tourists. However, keeping the ruse quiet is more difficult than they suspected, not to mention the loud and fun-seeking American guests.

The title makes little sense and bares little relevance to the story but it is better than the cash in American title, which sought to increase its audience by claiming some relation to the infamous Profumo sex scandal of the period. With such a nonsensical title it was no surprise to find a rather simple and uninspiring comedy that is pretty bland and has no real appeal other than a collection of famous faces being present and some limited appeal to fans of the period. The plot is simplistic and merely a thin excuse for a lot of sudden costume changes and harmless flirting – can they keep the ruse hidden? Can they keep the flirting from becoming something more serious? Can I manage to keep watching long enough to find out? The answer to the final question is 'yes', but only just. Without any laughs to really speak of it was hard to find a reason to keep watching other than sheer bloody-mindedness, which unfortunately I have! The plot goes exactly where you'd expect it to but it does so without really ever being interesting or entertaining.

The cast don't have the material to work with and it is only really their recognisable faces that have value. Ian Carmichael is OK and does OK with a much different accent from normal. Greenwood is unconvincing and her lack of real fight in her marriage makes the plot a bit more sobering than funny.

Cecil Parker is as strong as he usually is but has limited time, as indeed does the instantly recognisable Dennis Price. Liz Fraser plays on her looks as ever, but she is good looking and has a great figure here – who can blame the film for taking the chance to get her down to her underwear, shame that her flirting and giggling actually isn't funny at all. The support cast all do their bit without really shinning more than once or twice, the only real surprise being a very young looking Derek Nimmo in a typically camp role.

Overall if someone can explain the title to me then I will not have totally wasted 90 minutes but as it stands I probably have done. The plot is pointless and the material gives the well-known cast nothing to really work with. The poor script and sub-par flirting all act to produce a laugh free event, which is something of a problem in a film that is selling itself as a comedy. Might appeal to fans of the actors but more than likely many viewers will have given up on this lame product before it has even reached the halfway point.

I Was A Teenage Oedipus...

A radiant Ingrid Thulin escapes from Scandinavian gloom and into sunnier climes in this sensuous, if disturbing, erotic drama set in Venice. As the frivolous mother of a troubled teenage boy, she is a walking Oedipus complex in designer gowns (and a warm-up for more celebrated 'monster mother' roles in Night Games and The Damned). She dominates this film with her usual minimum of effort, no matter that she spends so much of it off-screen - in the arms of a dashing gigolo played by John Saxon.

How does her impressionable young son pass his time while Mummy is absent? Now we come to the secret of WHY this film is so totally obscure. (Even fans of Thulin, or of director Mauro Bolognini, barely seem to know it exists.) Wandering the desolate beaches of the Lido, the son falls in with a vagabond group of pubescent boys, ruled over by a mysterious older man whose attachment to them is...well, let's just say that implications are everything, and Bolognini's dreamily homoerotic photography of underage flesh would never pass scrutiny in our more knowing times.

For anybody who does not find its sexual subtext too off-putting, Agostino is an intelligent and handsomely photographed film. Its black-and-white views of Venice are as breathtaking as the later Technicolor visions of Visconti and Nicolas Roeg. If I can't recommend it wholeheartedly, that's because Bolognini (unlike, say, Louis Malle in the far superior Pretty Baby) does not seem entirely aware of the dilemmas raised by his own film.

At what age does human sexuality begin? At what age is it ethically acceptable for an artist to portray it? Such questions are rife in Agostino. The answers are nowhere to be found.

Unsatisfactory remake

It was not till i looked at the entries for this film and Sailor Beware that my suspicions were confirmed,that this film was a remake of Sailor Beware.Albeit that the plot has been changed ever so slightly.Even Cyril Smith plays the same role as in the original.The problem is that if you have seen the original then unfortunately there is not a great deal of point in watching this film as it is inferior in most ways.The cast is not as good and the funny lines are few and far between.Dennis Price has star billing but is only present for about 10 minutes.The cast tries its best but it has to be said that Marjorie Rhodes is no match for the original battle axe,Peggy Mount.It is difficult to understand why Hammer lurched out of horror to make this film.Maybe it shows the straits to which the film industry had fallen at this moment in time.

A wonderful and funny movie

One of the best films of Spanish cinema. In it a group of great actors, including those found Toni Leblanc, Manolo Gómez Bur, José Luis López Vázquez, make an exceptional performance and a demonstration of the world has always surrounded rogue Spanish society. A movie that I never tire of seeing. highly recommended. The plot tells the story of cheaters, which are very strapped for cash and very fond of football, but as do not have this money, dedicana the door to go to the football stadium of Real Madrid, so that the doorman would tell the future of the party. All this until one day look like men of the Red Cross go to the stadium without paying, just by the fact of going in uniform. In this situation, it happens to be the brainchild of the Red Cross in order to watch free football games,,, and from there a series of adventures they accompany.

What's wrong with Euro?

Here is a film made in 1961. Yet, it could have been made yesterday.

The issues surrounding the European Union, very clearly illustrated in this movie, are still reverberating around the world today. Idealism vs realpolitik. Vested interested vs the 99%. Can politicians be both moral & pragmatic? Can there be compromise without sacrificing principles? Can power be exercise decently?

The screenplay written by Michel Audiard is outstanding. Complex issues are presented effectively and clearly. It is no wonder that he is much proclaimed amongst the French literati.

This film has no fancy effects or fast cuts. There is no easy Hollywood style resolution. But watch if you want a little illumination in a muddy world.

This is one of the very strangest films I have ever seen. Several travelers are en route to Reno, when thunderstorm causes them to take refuge in an abandoned church. Falling asleep, the two leads dream they are Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. The "Eden" sequence, up until the "expulsion" is in color. The first twenty minutes of the film are actually pretty decent, and seem to build up to something good, but the dream sequence in "Eden" is just too silly for words. The sight of Mickey Rooney playing the Devil in a padded snake suit is alone worth watching the film for. Paul Anka sings the theme song and has a rather minor role in the film. Also noteworthy is Tuesday Weld who does not appear in the dream sequence, but who sparkles during her screen time. The film ends with Eve requesting a pickle from Ad. A definite must-see!

LOVED IT!! LOVED IT! LOVED IT!

I have to say this has got to be one of my all-time favorite film! I first saw it on AMC and fell in love with it instantly. Ever since than, I've been looking for it on video when I had VHS (unfortunately I was unsuccessful). And now I'm searching for it on DVD (still unsuccessful).

Why does Paramount Pictures rarely release any of their old films on video/DVD??? It's so disappointing they place restrictions.
