Dangerous psychopath Grant Williams is seeing psychiatrist Onslow Stevens

"The Couch" is a generally overlooked but excellent film noir about a murderous psychopath, played superbly and believably by Grant Williams. Williams at various times is driven, agitated, perfectly calm, sociable, psychotic, attractive to women, nervous, and confused. He can be arrogant, charming and icy. He can regress into childhood memories. He controls his emotions up to a point, but when Williams is on the couch psychiatrist Onslow Stevens is able to bring out his severe anger and hatred. Williams is capable of detailed planning, fearful of being found out, and a killer.

Shirley Knight plays Williams' love interest. She's ever so trusting and sweet, and that helps protect her. Still, he takes her to remote locations such as his grandfather's old mansion and a cliff overlooking the LA freeways. In every encounter with her, often at night, there is danger and tension. We know that he has served time for an earlier explosion of violence and rape. Stevens is trying to assess whether he should be institutionalized for treatment.

Williams goads the police by calling them five minutes before his murders in calls they cannot trace. He kills at 7 o'clock, choosing random victims. He has an ulterior motive, however. Not only that, his killing expresses his boiling hatred and resentment of his father.

"The Couch" is well done in all respects. Its provenance includes Blake Edwards who wrote the story. That year Edwards also directed "Experiment in Terror", another story of a psychopath. The script is by Robert Bloch, who co-wrote "Psycho". Williams is not schizophrenic in this one. His psychosis is of a different character. It's interesting that both "The Couch" and "Experiment in Terror" feature sporting events and crowds in their last parts.

The often deeply-shadowed cinematography, disliked by several other reviewers here, will actually be appreciated by film noir enthusiasts. It's not flat but maintains the classic look of black and white contrasts. One nice sequence involves location scenes of downtown LA, crowded streets and Williams wandering, neon lights and recognizable marquees and signs. Indoor sets, especially inside the office of Stevens, continue to feature shadowed photography. Stevens is shown half in shadow at times, emphasizing both his craggy and worried features and his troubled mind in deciding what to do about Williams. When Williams is at his apartment and interacting with the seductive Anne Helm or her mother, the lighting is normal, showing his apparent normality with people around him.

The scripting is meticulous. This tends to slow the story down somewhat in order to bring out the characters. The direction does not go for cheap thrills but achieves its tension by focusing on the emotional shifts in Williams, seemingly quite normal at times, and his behavior, which seems both controlled at times and uncontrolled at others or at least capable of bursting the bounds of self-control. The mood of the film seems to have nodded in the direction of how a Fritz Lang film evolves and feels. Director Crump was an experienced director of documentary shorts, and some of that documentary feel seems to have come into this film's approach to the story-telling, which is at once dramatic but straightforward.

This Warner Brothers film is now available in a beautiful widescreen print.

Up In Smoke

The only similarity this bears to Thomas De Quincy's "Confessions Of An English Opium Eater" is that both characters have the name Thomas De Quincy. The novel is an autobiography of the effects on opium on one man's life, while the film is a Vincent Price lead "Lady From Shanghai" like twisting film noir.

Price's De Quincy is a sailor, whose voice over is a Raymond Chandler meets De Quincy poetry, come to San Francisco after a long stay in "the orient", where he involves himself in the dubious world of human trafficking, particularly brides in China Town during the 1800's Tong Gang Wars. The film opens with a brutal scene involving screaming women thrown in a net like freshly caught tuna, and then a violent battle between two gangs on the beach as they try to deliver the kidnapped women to their fate.

Albert Zugsmith produced classics like "The Incredible Shrinking Man", "Written On The Wind", and "Touch Of Evil", along with directing many exploitation flicks, which this film veers into from time to time. The film is more in the Siejun Suzuki brand of wildly inventive, free wheeling pulpy expressionism, than Ed Wood kitschy ineptness. Despite the title the only scene involving opium is when Price takes some in order to get close to the women trafficking ring, and has a particularly impressive Lynchian circa Elephant-Man era hallucination scene (which is worth price of admission alone).

However the best scene comes when Price wakes up surrounded by guards and has to make a slow motion (cus he's high on opium) dash out of the den, and to the rooftops of china town. The scene is also completely silent, and truly marvelous in it's execution. I know slow motion action sequences where Greogiran chanting plays over sweat glistened A-listers shooting each other in mid air are common place now, but in Zugsmith's hands your reminded of excting an action sequence can be when it's done right. The plot is not particularly strong.

Why De Quincy is saving the girl, or what he is doing in China town at all, has many twists and turns, and leaves some gaps to be filled? But the direction, the suspense, and especially Price's performance make lines that would sound preposterous and almost Terrance Malick like in their stream of consciousness like "You wear as many masks as their are stars reflected in a gutter", sound as if he says them everyday. Such are the gifts of Price.

I was very pleased with this movie, that can be found easily on Youtube, though you might want to get a good copy to take in the fullness of Zugsmith's frames.There is a dreaminess and nightmarishness to all of the scenes, like opium was poured over a script to a lesser film, and this movie stumbled out of a smoke ridden room, rambling of dancing girls emerging from cages, crashes through windows, being swept to sea from sewer drains, and teetering on the edge of rooftops with vertigo at a snails pace, and feeling "the abbacus of fate has your number". Good times.

A sweet family film that will warm your heart!

I find it interesting and a bit frustrating that so many speak of "Old Yeller" as the holly grail of "boy and his dog" films and that "Big Red" as been totally lost in the mix and is now even out of print. I actually don't understand as I personally found "Old Yeller" vastly underrated and I believe that if it wasn't for it's unusually sad ending for a Disney film,it probably would have not been hailed the classic as it is today.After all when you take off the shock ending of "Old Yeller" you are left with a pretty bland film with very little story except ..A boy left to take care of his home with the help of his new dog.. But enough of this and on to "Big Red". This is an absolutely charming little film. It avoids the certain things that makes other Disney 60's flicks age badly so in "Big red" we have no Cheesy theme song a la "Davy Crockett" (Thank goodness for that!) What makes this film work the most is the superb performance by the two main actors Walter Pidgeon and Gilles Payant. The Canadian kid was just natural and charming and it's surprising that it was his first and only film because he outdo in the acting department in a single film most of the Disney kids the studio were spitting out in the 60's.He was likable and the actor presence made us really care for the kid , I was surprise by this because normally in that sort of film the dog end up being more interesting then the kid but this time both the dog and the kid were equally interesting to watch.Talking about the dog , I usually don't think about the trainers when I watch films featuring animals but I had a lot of "How did they make the dog look so natural on screen?" moment , great work done with the dogs in this film. Walter Pidgeon who was a bit of a Walt Disney look alike is really good in this film and I enjoyed the fact that the film was as much about his character and his relationship with the kid then the boy and his relationship with the dog , unlike "Old Yeller" this film as a bit more layer. It's not just about a dog , It's also about a lonely man who lost the will to love until that kid shows up.So it makes this film more accessible then your typical animal film fare , I have friends that cant stand "Dog" films and they really enjoyed this one. The other supporting cast are great as well. The music is very pleasing,I love the main theme and the very short song by the Sherman, again , it was great not to have one of those silly songs. This film felt very short because I wasn't bored once. It is really unfortunate that "Big Red" did not find a public and that now it is a forgotten film but I couldn't recommend more for any fan of Disney live action flick of the past to give this wonderful film a try.

A Boy's Life as a Vienna Choirboy

This is one of the best films I've seen that makes me like the Vienna Boys Choir even more.

The story centers around Tony Fiala, who wanted to become a Vienna Choirboy, and Peter, one of the senior Choirboy. At first Peter does not like Tony because it seems like the choirmaster takes a liking to Tony and pushes Peter to the background. However, after an incident in which Tony takes the blame for himself rather than blame Peter, the two become fast friends.

Overall, it is a wonderful movie that gets you behind the scenes of what it is like being a Vienna Choirboy. I highly recommend it.

the best film on the subject

This is the most truthful version of one of my favourite books. It makes all the other films on the subject of the three musketeers sound and look like trash. I saw it last when I still lived in Bulgaria, Sofia, where I originally come from. I still remember the thrill with which we children went to see the movie. We were a bunch of book buffs and all of us knew the book by heart. And we were not disappointed. D'Artagnan looked and behaved exactly as we had imagined him and so did Aramis, Porthos, Athos and Milady.

The year was 1962! To this very day this is a film that I consider a must for every movie lover and for every romantic soul.

Deuxième Epoque

When TV was not very common in France ,some theatrically released movies looked like miniseries,divided into two parts called "Epoques" ;this is the second part of "Les Trois Mousquetaires" called "Milady's revenge".

At the time,it was the swashbucklers craze and when they could not get Jean Marais,they hired his then alter ego Gérard Barray who was to become a specialist of the genre (see also "Pardaillan").

Bernard Borderie was a costume drama specialist,and he was about to hit the big time with his "Angelique Marquise Des Anges " saga which,unfortunately ,did not do the excellent books justice.

The same can't be said of this poor adaptation;Borderie once said he had to hide the paucity of his budgets with beautiful costumes,nice cinematography (wide screen)and plenty of horses :it shows here:neither the events in England nor the siege of La Rochelle are shown on the screen;even the death of Milady is botched (no "Bourreau De Béthunes"!) Mylène Demongeot is an attractive Milady but she is sadly unsupported by a poor script;Barray is dashing and has plenty of go;the three musketeers have a relatively short time on the screen .

NB:Gerard Barray has made few movies after the sixties,but one of them is a masterpiece :Amenabar's "Abre Los Oyos" ,the part of Serge Duvernois ,from L.I.,remade as "Vanilla skies".

It's an unusual slant on the subject of money. In this case our hero has got to get rid $1 million by spending it within a certain time if he hopes to inherit millions more. What does he do? He helps his friends with loans, invests in projects and more, bets on races, and so on. Trouble is he actually becomes successful, gains returns on investments, wins bets, etc., so he's not that far ahead! Poor fellow. It's fun though.

Effective Thriller lacks credibility

This thriller does manage to hold its suspense ,at least till near the climax,but eventually rather loses credibility.There are too many plot holes,which at times make it all seem rather silly.John Ireland is effective as the husband.Like many American stars on the decline he has been brought over to try and help get the film an American distribution.It is difficult to realise just how prolific the Danzigers were.However this was really the last decade in which the double bill would play a part in cinemas and in particular B features such as this.they would be replaced with dreadful 20 minute travelogues by the likes of Global Queensway.

Murphy at his best

I've long been a fan of Audie Murphy and event his lesser movies are better than most of the drivel that comes out of Hollywood today.

This is a good movie on its merits and not just as a vehicle for Murphy. It works well on all levels - story, acting, and directing. What I most enjoyed is the fact each actor is given screen time to rise above the stereotypes and create a memorable character - even if they only have a few lines.

The two I remember most are the young banker Seymour Kern (John Saxon) and the Mexican cowboy Johnny Caddo (Rudolph Acosta). Saxon in particular does well showing true, believable growth; he isn't just there as a foil/sidekick for Murphy to play off of but as a genuine character treated as equally important to the storyline. Acosta, usually a villain in the movies, plays an equally important role as a Spanish cowboy who joins simply because "it's the right thing to do".

Saucy farce with Nyree Dawn Porter

Struggling insurance salesman Tom tries to drum up some business with his skirt-chasing old army pal Drew, whom had once - accidentally, unknown to Tom - saved his life. Drew has the kind of rich uncle, most usually found in this kind of farce, who will only entrust him with the family business so long as he's respectably married. Faced with a visit by the uncle from across the Atlantic, Drew needs to find someone pronto to pose as his wife, but none of his regular floozies fit the bill. What to do? He seizes on Tom's desperation and promises him a big insurance deal if his attractive young wife Jenny will masquerade as Drew's until the uncle is out of the way again. Of course, all kinds of compromising situations and other complications ensue. Above all, how can Tom ensure that Drew will keep his lecherous hands off Jenny? This farce has an abundance of stock characters; apart from the uncle there's Tom's ludicrously puritanical and pompous boss, a nosey old gossip of a neighbour and a trio of comical car thieves straight out of a children's matinée of the time. On the other hand a young Anton Rodgers is effective as Tom and Nyree Dawn Porter, some years before her fame in The Forsyte Saga, is charming and lovely as Jenny. Australian Kenneth J. Warren, a popular character actor on British TV in the sixties, and who sadly died young, is amusing as the rascally Drew. Despite the obvious faults, I thought this little movie was fun.

I admit it - I love Troy Donahue. His movies are guilty pleasures.

This is a semi-guilty pleasure. In some ways it retains the sheen and talents at the waning days of the big studio machine, and that's a plus. It's soapy, melodramatic and over-the-top, which is certainly entertaining if you don't look for Art with a capital A. And there is a visual lushness in the cinematography not to mention the emphasis on physical lushness, eg Troy Donahue and Diane McBain, and some of the other characters, all dressed to the nines in suits, ties, contrasting sharp vests, crinolined party dresses, preppy red v-neck sweaters backdropped against a blue sky on an impossibly handsome blond Adonis. I can't even say anymore if Troy Donahue is a good actor. I just like watching and listening to him, and I think he does have a certain conviction- his earnestness - which lends authenticity to his performances. Others call him wooden. I think he's more than good, and under-rated. (And my eyes can't get enough of his physical beauty.) Then there's Diane McBain, who I scantly know but is right up there with Donahue - breathtakingly beautiful. Claudette is okay, but the part itself is anachronistic and annoying - a bit long-suffering and stoic, as her parts often are - in a role that demands she ignore a cruel, brutish, crass man she marries. And rounding out the pluses, I love Max Steiner's lush, anachronistic score. The negatives do abound: the script is a bit shrill and melodramatic, which you expect of soap operas of that period. I can't decide if Karl Malden is dynamic or excessive, though he's always effective. Connie Steven was never my perky cup of tea. Dean Jagger caught my attention as a gentle father-figure, and touched me deeply. Ultimately, my feelings are colored by the bias of nostalgia. I very young when it was released, and have some residual nostalgia for what I remember and miss from that era. Someone twenty years old would find it mostly silly, I think.

"Strangely compelling"

I saw this film about three years ago, late at night after a session at the pub, so my perceptions at the time, and my recollections now, might not be exactly razor sharp. I have to say, though, that I found it strangely compelling. Arthur Howard, the much put-upon Pettigrew in the "Whack-O" TV series (which also starred the dark genius of 50s/60s British comedy, Jimmy Edwards), is in "Paradisio" a similarly likeable, self-effacing individual this time thrust bemusedly into the role of Everyman in the midst of Cold War intrigue. Michael Coy is quite right to point out the fascination of its Continental location footage, which reminds us how recent an event WW2 was at the time. The sparseness of dialogue rather contributes to the film's "ambient" quality, and the almost dream-like visual texture gently seduces the eye.

"Hurrah for buxom babes!" I say, the taste of most of us men even today, I would aver. It's probably true to say that films like "Paradisio" serve as useful benchmarks for the gradual post-war shift in sexual attitudes from repression to frankness. Seen from our perspective, as Michael Coy hints, "Paradisio" seems laughably inhibited and prim (rather like Arthur Howard himself, or at any rate his on-screen persona), but today's unflinching treatment of sexuality would not have been possible without such earlier, less candid treatments. I'd gladly watch it a second time.

Review :

Life was tough in 1600

The title character, Takezo (later renamed MM), is a fierce beast who lives for fighting and war. The opening of the film sees him crawling in the mud and around slain soldiers to find the young lad who joined him in battle. Takezo mourns that "there'll be no more wars, and what shall I do ?".

The pair are sheltered by a woman and her daughter, who live by stealing from dead soldiers. All four are on the run, as Takezo has in fact deserted. And when Takezo is in turn deserted by the other three, be becomes an outlaw, killing to escape capture.

But he feels obliged to return home, to pass on news and check on his sister's welfare. The game of cat and mouse has begun. The Shogun's vassal's men fail, and the job of capturing the fugitive falls to a wily priest.

I found this film at least watchable and, at times, engrossing. I could well have imagined the great Mifune playing the lead role. Takezo is bursting with vigour and aggression, seething like a wild beast. When he is captured, he is trussed up like a chicken and strung on a high tree to twist in the wind and "have his eyes picked out by the crows". During this scene, he holds a long dialogue with his captors, mainly the priest. His rasping, screeching and furious voice is nearly spellbinding.

The performances are great all round. Apart from the lead actor, the wily priest gives a performance which runs the gamut from serious to hilarous. And the spiteful and scheming grandmother is a real blast too.

This story is reportedly a classic and has been filmed many times. My views it that Takezo is a kind of Japanese everyman. Seething with passion but hemmed in by a society which no longer values warriors. A beast who is being coaxed towards spiritual awakening. Loyal to certain people, including family, but betrayed at unexpected times.

And there is some simply beautiful scenery. Panoramic views of snow-capped mountains and green fields. Lovely stuff.

In short, a powerful film with action, betrayal and a strong spiritual theme. Recommended.

Jerry Webster and Carol Templeton are both in the advertising business, but for different agencies. Annoyed by Jerry's methods of using alcohol and women to ensure contracts for his agency, Carol tries to get him thrown out of his profession. To avoid this Jerry bribes the girl who'd testify against him, by starring her in a TV commercial for a product named VIP that he's just made up. By accident these commercials are broadcasted and to keep his job, Jerry has to come up with VIP for which he enlists the help of Doctor Linus Tyler. Carol goes to see the Doctor to try and get the VIP account, but because she and Jerry have never met, she mistakes Jerry for the Doctor. Jerry then takes advantage of this situation to win her.

The VIP

This Doris Day/Rock Hudson comedy is a vast improvement over their previous one, "Pillow Talk". At least, both stars seem to be having a relaxed time with one another, under the direction of Delbert Mann. It helps a lot that the tremendously talented writing team of Stanley Shapiro and Paul Henning are around to give the movie lots of laughs with what they created.

The idea of warring advertising executives works well. Doris Day plays the uptight Carol Templeton, a girl from the provinces that manages to land a plum job in a Madison Avenue firm and lives in a fantastic Manhattan apartment that was only to be found in the movies. Carol dresses with style, but one wonders whose idea was to have her wear those hideous hats she constantly sports.

Carol's enemy turns out to be Jerry Webster, the playboy adman who steals everything from Carol's reach. As played by Rock Hudson, this is one of his best roles in comedy. Somehow he made us believe he was that man who has a knack to get what he wants, especially from the adoring women he charms.

The basic premise of the film is the constant battle between Carol and Jerry. Both stars do some of their best work as they clash over the new product that suddenly appears in ads all over the place. VIP is something nobody knows about, yet Carol wants to get the account. VIP turns out to be a product that gives its user a great feeling for only 10 cents. Sampling the product at the Ad Council, where Carol takes Jerry to be tried for his unprofessional conduct, turns out to be one of the best things that ever happened to Carol and Jerry and all the ones that have a taste of the product.

Doris Day was a beautiful comedienne. Her wholesome figure and natural charm is one of the best things this film has going for it. Rock Hudson also is excellent with his take of the lecherous Jerry. Tony Randall plays another of his neurotic characters. Edie Adams is only seen shortly, but in her few scenes, she is wonderful. Jack Oakie makes a great appearance as the Virginian with a taste for girls and booze on a business trip in Manhattan.

This is a comedy for Doris Day and Rock Hudson fans.

Who is the forger?

Karin Dor ("The Green Archer") and Siegfried Lowitz ("Der Frosch mit der Maske") return for the 7th entry of the Edgar Wallace series, while Hellmut Lange stars for the first time as Peter Clifton who marries the beautiful Jane (Karin Dor). Jane discovers a printing machine for banknotes in her new home. Has she just married "The Forger of London", or who else could be responsible for the counterfeits? Funny enough, Peter doesn't know that himself because he seems to be a victim of schizophrenia... which Jane once dryly describes to him thus: "Can you imagine how interesting it is to have a husband who never knows where he wakes up?" Typical music by Martin Böttcher, unusual story, powerfully directed by Harald Reinl - a good movie, even if none of the most popular in the series. Apparently the producers tried to break fresh ground here instead of repeating a formula, and this courage is one reason why the Edgar Wallace series lasted so long.
